Buying lumber in South Dakota

South Dakota's local timber production is concentrated in the Black Hills, while much of the state relies more heavily on lumberyards and regional distribution for building and specialty wood products.

The USDA Forest Service's 2024 inventory estimates nearly 2 million acres of forest land. Ponderosa pine dominates the Black Hills resource, while elm-ash-cottonwood and oak-hickory forests occur in smaller areas elsewhere.

• Ask about species, grade, dimensions, drying, treatment, surfacing, minimum quantities, and whether delivery is available to your area.
