Illinois combines an oak-hickory forest resource with major urban and regional distribution markets, so its directory includes both local wood producers and dealers carrying material sourced well beyond the state.

Illinois DNR's forest planning material describes roughly 5 million acres of forest and identifies oak-hickory as the dominant forest-type group. Bottomland hardwoods and other central hardwood types add regional diversity.
